I have been working at UC San Diego

Pros

My positions is very flexible and I get to work with instruments that few people will have the opportunity to work with.

Cons

I'm not sure where my current work will lead me. My position may not be typical, ever lab is different but I usually work allow with very little input from my supervisor.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More group meetings and a willingness to help researcher advance in the career.

Decent place to TA but you have to work to avoid the pettiness that sometimes gets in the way of doing your job

I have been working at UC San Diego

    Pros

predictable schedules and on-campus location are great for grad students; SD weather is unbeatable; weekly on-campus farmers market; have some flexibility in what u present in classroom; good training for TAs; good feedback and student surveys help TAs improve

    Cons

supervisors are hit and miss; some can be so gossipy in team meetings that it's a waste of time to sit through them (but you're paid to be there so there's not much you can do but tolerate it or try to change subjects); high levels of student stress can weigh on TAs who actually care about their pupils

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

decent TA experience overall but TAs shouldn't have to sit and listen to supervisor's gossip/political preferences/ general pettiness. we're paid to teach not be a sounding board for someone who has a PhD but few manners to go with it. it's just plain poor management.
