Current Employee - Teaching Assistant in La Jolla, CA
Current Employee - Teaching Assistant in La Jolla, CA

I have been working at UC San Diego part-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Work is helpful to studies at first. Useful for further employment. Builds relationships with professors and students. In some cases, being a TA will be great training for public facing roles.

Cons

Few professors give TAs additional responsibility as they become more advanced. This gives TAs more time to focus on studies, but can make the job feel like a penance rather than an opportunity

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate the value of teaching to grad students by making it a more explicit component of advancing towards a degree.

Former Employee - Biology Grad Student in La Jolla, CA

I worked at UC San Diego full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Wide selection of faculty to work with, beautiful geographic location, decent stipend, generally large incoming grad student class sizes allow for social comradery, excellent peer mentoring program, wonderful fitness classes at student prices

    Cons

Need more relevant courses offered - statistics, biotech business skills, etc., program length is too long, parking is expensive and hard to find even if you do have a permit

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't keep grad students longer than they need to be kept to further your own career at their expense.
