Former Employee - Research Analyst in San Francisco, CA

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Always a lot of activity with cutting edge research, opportunities to understand the operations of a public academic institution, generally beautiful campus

Cons

Little room for growth for anyone who is not a MD or PhD, so expect to be treated as a second- or third-class citizen if your title is not "Doctor"

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train the academics to be better managers, create training programs and career ladders for non-doctorate research staff, conduct more frequent internal audits in preparation for external audits

Former Employee - Associate Specialist III in San Francisco, CA

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great deal of autonomy, excellent benefits, availability of many training resources and certifications for (self-initiated) career development, University hiring highly values previous UCSF experience -- making it easier for at least latitudinal job changes to escape an intolerable work environment

    Cons

Expect to be hired at the bottom of your position's pay scale with no room for bargaining. No PhD = Unbreakable glass ceiling in doing any academic work. I was Project Director for a huge research grant, literally did all of the work, without credit, PI plagiarized the hell out of my work before I could publish. Hold your cards close to your chest, and choose your PI *very* wisely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please, for the love of God, take advantage of University training on supervision and mentoring.

I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, an atmosphere of collegiality, great locations and campuses. UCSF is a world class employer. Diverse and engaged workforce

    Cons

Intellectual snobbery, Ivory Tower mentality and all it's attendant sins. Still guilty of pimping out the poor and disadvantaged communities. Not willing to engage institutional self criticism and systemwide reform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your academics to be managers of people. Let some folks who don't have Dr. before their name, engage in serious scholarship. Look to UPenn for how they engage the inner city neighborhood in which they reside.
