I worked at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The positive side of working at UC is the benefits, and being part of a world-class research institute.

    Cons

There are major cut backs occuring at UC -- consolidations, "shared services," and other cost-cutting measures that involve substantial reductions in staffing, particularly of unrepresented employees. The workloads have increased significantly, and it's made for an unhappy work environment for many employees. Additionally, there have been no significant raises for non-unionized staff in many years, and given that salaries are well below market rates, it may not be the first place to look for a job. Significant changes will be starting July 1, 2013 to the pension plan as well, so lure of great benefits at UC is also changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be kind to your employees. Take the available classes on leadership and managing people. Unfortunately, a number of managers at UC are promoted into those positions without the necessary experience or qualifications to be good managers -- don't be one of those people. Also, learn the union contracts if you supervise unionized employees, and abide by them. You will save yourself, and your employees a great deal of heartache and hassle when it comes to dealing with problems, should they arise. Open communication and honesty are key.

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay for steady work. There are many small perks and groups that you can participate in at any level of service.

    Cons

It's hard to work with Doctors. It is hard to advance past the AA or Analyst postions. Career advancement is concentrated to Managers, Directors, and upper management. Very little career advancement for support staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management and Supervisor education. Make all the departments & Foundation to participate in the Career Path program.
