Pros

UCSF provided good benefits (health insurance, time off, retirement plans) and an ideal learning environment for a new graduate seeking additional education in the future. The team of health care providers and managers that I worked for expected a high level of performance, but also provided support and opporunities to learn and improve. Excelling at the job resulted in recognition and promotions.

Cons

The environment may very much depend on your leadership team. At times bureaucracy can be a barrier to advancement. Change and processes are very slow. Turnover in research teams is high.

Advice to Management

There needs to be a better appreciation for teams that really make things work efficiently - other groups can learn from their methods.

    Pros

Truly inspired people to work with. Good facilities. Many opportunities for lower level (non-PhD) researchers.

    Cons

Research has become extremely competitive accompanied by the stress of constant innovation. If you like it then it is a great environment. You have to find the right people to work with.

    Advice to Management

Be a good colleague for everyone around you. It takes a good team to do great things. Respect everyone you work with and every contribution they make.

  2. Excellent public sector service.

    Pros

    Innovation is respected. Collaboration encouraged.

    Cons

For better or worse, MD/PhD, has lion's share of power. This stiffle's innovation for other leaders in IT, operations, finance, facilities, and administration as compared to publicly held Pharma/Med. Device and managed care companies.

    Advice to Management

Great place, don't fix it if it isn't broken. That said, create innovation incentives and publication opportunities for all senior positions, not just faculty.
