Current Employee - Staff Research Associate I in San Francisco, CA
Current Employee - Staff Research Associate I in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (less than an year)

Pros

Lots of events and seminars with prominent speakers to attend. Get the sense that the faculty really care about the research associates/analysts/graduate students/postdocs in their lab. Faculty are attentive to concerns of their lab members. I feel like I have a project that could someday lead to better prevention and treatment of patients - so I feel very motivated to keep working.

Cons

As is the case with any large university/corporation, there is a lot of bureaucracy to get through before one can get started with doing any experiments. The pay is not great given that I have to pay rent in San Francisco.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to provide more/better funding to students and staff.

Current Employee - CSWII in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good pay
    Innovative
    Good benefits
Sense of doing good for the community
Passionate staff and managers -- usually

    Cons

If you work on the Campus side, as I do, you see the big disparity between Campus & Medical Center
    Extremely hierarchical
You have to make your own opportunities for advancement, and yell about your accomplishments from the rooftops! Otherwise, senior managers may not notice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat staff with dignity -- don't be so lackadaisical
