I have been working at UC Santa Cruz full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pockets of amazing people. Working in the redwoods. Working in Higher Ed. Library borrowing privileges. Pockets of opportunity to do amazing work. You can have a good work/life balance, but you need to make sure you hold the line.

    Cons

Weak management teams outnumber the good ones. Executive class are professors, who like at all universities, have never had a real job and in general are poor leaders and worse managers. This causes whole departments and divisions to be toxic and malfunctioning. However, in pockets of good management, UCSC has a tradition and culture of innovation, research, service, kindness, and creativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove management that can't build good teams. Remove the bullies from all positions.

I have been working at UC Santa Cruz part-time for more than a year

    Pros

engineering department helps fund most students through grants, research positions, and teaching assistant positions. I haven't had to pay any tuition as a masters student. and get free health insureance through the university. Great professors and opportunity to work on progressive research projects. good connections with companies in silicon valley (just over the hill).

    Cons

Some required classes dont relate to my research. putting in a lot of hours with classes, research, and teahing.
