I have been working at UC Santa Cruz full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Creative and open work environment, where driven individuals can excel and grow considerably.

The bar is set high for your success and there is a competitive atmosphere (at least in our lab).

The people you work with are all quite sharp and push you to do better work.

Cons

A very Isolating environment, cooped up in a lab for 12 hours a day 6 days a week takes a special type of person.

The monotony can be endless and is many times rewarded with failure.

I have been working at UC Santa Cruz full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pockets of amazing people. Working in the redwoods. Working in Higher Ed. Library borrowing privileges. Pockets of opportunity to do amazing work. You can have a good work/life balance, but you need to make sure you hold the line.

    Cons

Weak management teams outnumber the good ones. Executive class are professors, who like at all universities, have never had a real job and in general are poor leaders and worse managers. This causes whole departments and divisions to be toxic and malfunctioning. However, in pockets of good management, UCSC has a tradition and culture of innovation, research, service, kindness, and creativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove management that can't build good teams. Remove the bullies from all positions.
