Pros

Job security is one thing that you will always have with public sector work. There are a ton of vacation days that are paid in addition to personal and sick days. In many cases you hit the ceiling for your personal and sick days with normal usage.

Cons

Job security is a double-edged sword also means little room for advancement.

Advice to Management

Push employees that are not productive instead of the employees who are.

    Pros

Long term employment, easy, straight forward work

    Cons

Not much room for advancement, some politics, horrible budget for the next two years, bonuses are rare, if you do not speak up you will stay in the same position for life

    Advice to Management

Listen more to employees, understand that UCLA does not compensate well so be kind.

Work as a TA only if you have additional outside sources of income.

    Pros

Working in the setting of a top university provides great educational opportunities and an intellectually stimulating environment.

    Cons

Unionized employees still lack many basic benefits, and TA salaries are not adequate to meet cost of living in Los Angeles. This is particularly true given the difficulty of transportation in Los Angles. It is virtually impossible to live in Los Angeles without a car, and the costs of owning and operating one exceed the very limited budget available via a TA salary.

    Advice to Management

Better benefits would help to attract and retain better graduate students. As it is, I can't endorse graduate school here as an independently viable option, from a financial standpoint. Maybe if you have a trust fund.
