Not if you're actually good at your job.

ProsYou get to work with some of the most brilliant people in medicine and scientific research.

ConsThe worst administration you could possibly pair with the most brilliant doctors and researchers. I would say only a small percentage of administration is actually competent. Most of the people in administration don't know how to do their jobs. They're just not qualified. They need to be retrained or moved into positions that they're actually qualified for.

What happens at UCSF is that if you're one of the few people in administration who actually works and is competent, you're picking up the slack and doing work for 3-4 other people. This burns out people who are actually competent and work hard.

I'm hoping this all turns around because Sue Desmond-Hellmann is now the chancellor. I really like her messages and she seems to have a solid understanding of what needs to change. But, the people at the top who allowed administration to grow to this level of dysfunction are mostly still there and they're not going to change easily. It's going to take some time to turn the entire dysfunctional administration culture around.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn how to manage people. Start with formalized annual performance reviews, more informal semi-annual evaluations, and regular check-ins (at least once per month).

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
