Former Employee - Adjunct Instructor in Largo, MD

I worked at UMUC part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

In the upper-level classes, the students are competent and motivated
Supportive administration
Flexible scheduling, since most classes are online
Pays a bit more than other local colleges

Cons

UMUC is pretty prescriptive in its online platform and in course content
The eight-week semesters reduce the quality of instruction/learning and make it difficult to keep up with the workload.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rethink the commitment to the eight-week format.

    Pros

Great coworkers, moving up is open if you are willing to work.
Volunteer for projects and be innovative.
    Make changes, make things easier.

    Cons

Salary is mediocre and doesn't provide much for reward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much can be done because the state seems to regulate everything.
The only advice I can give be open to constructive critiques, it will reduce turnover rates.

I have been working at UMUC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    -Decent starting salary
-People think you work at College Park
-"Diverse" enough to be a Historically Black College

    Cons

    -No accountability/training
    -Cannot rely on any department
    -Call center advising
-Bitter students who never earned a degree

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change from a call center to actual advising. Hold EVERY department to quality assurance standards. It doesn't make sense to "quality assure" advising and advising's quality of work is reliant on every other department. Seriously, the job is a call center.
