I have been working at UMass Medical School full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits. Big enough to find genuine colleagues and collaborators.

    Cons

Sub-culture of elitism. No mentorship. Little recourse in HR matters. Highly political.

    Advice to Management

More oversight over growth and mentorship of junior faculty. Establish clear protocols for recruiting, hiring, and dismissal of employees that are not subject to political influence.

I worked at UMass Medical School full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

UMass has a great work-life balance, benefits (vacation and sick time), and co-workers. Plenty of opportunities to learn new things. If you like working in a multi-cultural environment where cutting-edge science happens around you all the time, this is a great place to be. The people who work here really want to make a difference.

    Cons

If the lab is funded by grants, there is higher pressure for speedy results and publishable data. The compensation is not as much as industry.

    Advice to Management

Always be transparent about what is going on, particularly on the departmental level. When there is a reduction in force, be fair in giving all employees the same notification. HR could really stand to streamline the hiring process so that good candidates don't slip through the cracks while they maintain due diligence.
