Negative Outlook

I worked at UNESCO full-time (More than 3 years)

(Translated from English)

Pros

International environment, with people from all over the world. Opportunity to lead on initiatives to support policy development in countries, advocate for appropriate financing, or support capacity building. Flexible teams where those who can do something will be quickly given the responsibilities, even when their grade is lower than that of their colleagues.

Cons

Colleagues' capacity and motivation is variable, from very bright and motivated to just going to work for the paycheck without contributing much. When some people's contracts end, there is generally little concern or sympathy - no antipathy, but it is as if losing a job was just part of life, so no big deal.

Advice to Management

Improve human resources management. Good luck with the current financial situation - I love UNESCO and hope the best for the Organization!

    Pros

Wonderful work experience within a UN agency. Variety of responsibilities entrusted to us and extensive experience gained in the running and management of UNESCO.

    Cons

Not really. Long hours, particularly during the bi-annual Executive Board Conference.

I worked at UNESCO as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The opportunity to make a standing impact on international issues and policy is second to none. The people you'll meet at UNESCO are fascinating and wonderful, lifelong friends.

    Cons

Of course, it is an extremely bureaucratic organization, driven by politics and not always with a view to the greater good. It is perfect for a policy wonk or someone who has a lot of patience. But it is not a nimble or dynamic environment,

    Advice to Management

Reform human resources policies so that they are more realistic, especially for the consultants and interns who make up a significant percentage of the personnel that keep UNESCO running.
