Former Employee - PC Consultant in Pittsburgh, PA
Former Employee - PC Consultant in Pittsburgh, PA

I worked at UPMC

Pros

1. Job Security, They are the largest health system in Western PA, as long as you do your job you will have a job
2. Very low stress environment if you work in the hospitals, can't say they same for corporate side
3. Because it is so big you can transfer all over.
4. Benefits are probably the best you can get.

Cons

1. The doctors run everything and sometimes it makes no sense how they are babied
2. The Pay sucks, and they will almost always start you on the lower end of the pay scale..they will low ball you
3. Opportunities for advancement for a PC Consultant are difficult, your better off trying to get a Systems Analyst position, PC Consultants are usually pigeonholed in their jobs.

I have been working at UPMC

    Pros

The co-workers within whatever team you are working on, that are on or around your same pay-grade, tend to be very nice to work with. If you like politics and have an interest in Information Technology, than UPMC might be for you. You get a paycheck every two weeks and benefits are reasonable.

    Cons

Nepotism throughout the organization. There is a lot of people who really shouldn't be in the positions they are in. Some IT vendors are chosen not for the quality of their product, but who in executive management has financial interest in or otherwise is getting a kickback of some sort from. Many in IT Management don't have any technical background which leads to a lot of wasted time and money since decisions will be made on IT management's misunderstanding of problems, leading to solutions to problems that don't work. IT management typically will find a scapegoat below them to blame for their uneducated decision. This tends to be the low to mid-paygrade folks(non-management).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jeffrey Romoff leads by fear and intimidation and that culture flows down throughout the organization. The culture leads to people to do the "thing" that won't risk their jobs instead of doing the "right" thing . There is really no sense of teamwork between any of the various IT teams at UPMC. All the IT teams pretty much do their own thing to justify their existence. Instead of working together and coming up with a enterprise wide solution to common problems across the enterprise, IT teams fight politically, leading to duplication of efforts and wasted resources.

I have been working at UPMC

    Pros

UPMC is an excellent organization that is the leading healthcare provider in the region. The research and medical advancements they are making are just amazing. They offer good benefits to their full-time employees and the healthcare benefits are affordable!

    Cons

In my particular department, it seems that management lacks the actual skills to manage a group of people. They seem to be more interested in their personal agendas than the work of the group, and don't go to bat for their employees. That is just my department though, and I can't speak for other departments out there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think Senior Management is doing a good job of dealing with the trying economic times. I think there are too many mid-level managers with inflated salaries though, and would like to see some of the fat trimmed so that the employees doing all the work don't have to constantly worry that they will be the next to be let go.
