Current Employee – been working at UPS part-time
Pros – Haven't received the benifits yet, but from what I hear they are great. The pay is good for how many hours I work. The earn and learn program is great because I keep what I make and not have to deplete my checking account for tuition.
Cons – It is very physical work. You will go home sore and more exhausted than you have been in your life. It gets insanely hot in the summer, and I work in the sort isle... For the ones in the trailers I feel absolute sympathy for them. The demands are insane but if you can survive you will be happy that there is still time in the day for you to enjoy yourself. The pay isn't great weekly but you must keep in mind that you only work about 18 hours a week. So, excellent for a college student, other situations, not sure.
Advice to Senior Management – Provide every box handler with gloves! No gloves absolutely kills your hands. Ever thought about piece work? Get paid by the pound and the ones who work hard get paid more. You find who is slacking off or who isn't cut out for the job, gives motivation to try harder for better pay, and it would make the people who weigh the boxes actually put the weight... I have had irregs that werent irregs, and things that read 45 being well over 70. It is rediculous! Way to keep the weighers in check is to have the works having the ability to challenge the weight, of correct they get some sort of incentive if wrong they stay later after the sort. Also give out a map for the people who are wanting to be a sorter. I did this myself for Columbus hub and learned it in less than 2 days, passed the sort test by the third. It helps to know the states are grouped normally by region.
