I have been working at UPS

Pros

I would say the pros for driving for UPS are the benfits are the best i ever heard of any company giving to there employess. Making 30 dollars and hours plus at least 5 hours of overtime at time and half. After the 10 year mark you get 5 weeks paid vacations, 4 paid personal days and 7 paid sick days each year. Driving for UPS the day goes by so fast.

Cons

The cons for UPS is definitely the manangement. Supervisors that get promoted to on road Have no idea how to do the job. The upper management just look at numbers on how to be more efficient and cut out routes and makes the drivers day extremely heavy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop killing your drivers management and treat your good package drivers better by not slapping more work on them just because you know that they will get the job done.

I have been working at UPS

    Pros

    paid a lot for a no-brains job (PT-ers)
    union employees are virtually un-fireable
benefits for union employees are second-to-none
    opportunity to do many things

    Cons

promotion to FT is given to those who do not deserve it
transfer is hard to do if you are non-union
non-union benefits are expensive and suck
if you go management you have to wait for them to promote SIX union employees to driver before you can be CONSIDERED

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

develop those under you, else they will not hold you up. the folks at the bottom are the pillars.

I have been working at UPS

    Pros

Ok pay given the responsibility, ok benefits, don't have to work a lot of hours, on-site gym and cafeteria. People are pleasant.

    Cons

Few promotion opportunities for Supervisors, Managers, or Directors - terrible upward mobility. There is a huge glut of Managers and Directors that have been around forever --- making it challenging to move up unless someone dies. Culture is old-school. While hours are not long, you better be at your desk between 8am-5pm. Count on a max 2%-3% raise every year, even if you were an awesome performer. Career development process is almost entirely useless. If you are career motivated, UPS is not the place for you. If you're looking for an easy 8-5 job and little responsibility given the pay, UPS is the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

By not rewarding the go-getters in the Specialist, Supervisor, Manager, and Director ranks, there is a strong incentive for these top performers to look outside of UPS. I have seen 15-25 top performers move to other firms because they are not getting rewarded at UPS. You need to enable these top performers to have some career velocity at UPS, lest you find that you either (a) have to staff from the outside to fill future management ranks, or (b) continue to fill the management ranks with old-school, non-innovative, run-of-the-mill, tactically-thinking people. Also, the traditional old-school mentality (the focus on tactical stuff like reports, make sure the vacation calendar is filled out, United Way results, etc. vs. making money for the firm) has to be fixed.
