    Pros

People, good training opportunities, one week off each month.

    Cons

Worked a rotating shift, hard to get sleep patterns adjusted. After 25 years with the company I was laid off when the project I was working on ended and I was unable to obtain another position with the company.

    Advice to Management

Need to maintain more of a plant presence.

    Pros

When I started at URS, the business was growing, there were major hiring rounds, and young employees were being given the chance to take on major responsibilities and growth roles early on. Leadership was fostering development of employees.

    Cons

The financial crisis depleted clients' abilities to fund and commit to projects URS would perform for them. The project portfolio for the power division moved heavily toward nuclear power, which has been fraught with uncertainty (not opportunistic uncertainty, downside risk) for a long time was also disrupted by the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan. As business growth collapsed, management reacted by occasionally pursuing smaller opportunities, territorial squabbling, and avoiding strategic planning. Along with these challenges, the focus of work shifted from generating quality engineering deliverables and developing skilled engineers. Beaurocracies further eliminated opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Plan for the next new project before it happens, and pursue opportunities before they become necessities. Don't let under-performing employees muddy the waters for ambitious employees: give raises and opportunities based on merit, and encourage people who aren't ambitious to go elsewhere. There are ways to care for employees without breaking the bank.
