    Pros

URS is a great company comprised of a lot of very smart and capable people. It's also a company where an employee with entrepreneurial attributes (self-starter) can add value to the organization and to their own professional trajectory.

Management is very supportive of employees who take the initiative to develop new technologies or engineering/analysis processes.

    Cons

Unfortunately, URS is an organization where key leadership may at times lack expertise in the area of people management, placing greater emphasis on technical competence. This can at times lead to conflict within project teams that management cannot prevent or remedy.

In other instances, project managers with expertise in some areas may be tasked to lead efforts in projects for which they lack technical competence. Again, this leads to problems in meeting client/project objectives and results in team conflicts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would recommend that URS instill better standardized management training and evaluations throughout the organization. Currently, each office is run as a separate business unit and management structures (lines of authority) and styles (softer people management skills) are not consistent throughout the organization.

Also, certain business units (offices) have different groups specializing in unique functions. These groups tend to be silo-ed with little cross-functional training. I'd recommend HR find ways to rotate employees through various functional groups to enhance the skills/expertise of their staff.

    Pros

Benefits; it is recognized as a Fortune 500 company.

    Cons

Cold, distant, culture that is not in-touch with employees, nor care about employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

URS is out-of-touch with best management practices. It does not have methods to keep track of employee goals, management does not listen to employees; Management uses the computer to require employees to take hours of seminars and tests to inform employees of URS practices. There is no caring of employees. A very cold and distant organization.
