I worked at URS Corporation, an AECOM company full-time

Pros

Good technical experts in their respective fields

Cons

Office management doesn't communicate the office direction to the staff.
Business decisions don't appear logical. The only way it is logical is if there is something they're not telling the staff.
No opportunity for advancement.
Office management isn't forward thinking. 1 week of low sold time will get you laid off irrespective of the future outlook.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The office is under performing and has been for some time. URS corporate should replace the entire office management staff or close the office.
Everyone knows that the office is not performing well, don't insult the staff at town hall meetings by sugar coating the situation.

Doesn't Recommend

Good company, but still victim of the many pitfalls of consulting

I have been working at URS Corporation, an AECOM company full-time

    Pros

    -Decent pay
    -Good people to work with
-Plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and not be cooped up in the office

When there's work to go around (more on that later...) it's a pretty good place to work. The projects are interesting, the clients are definitely not bottom of the barrel, and the coworkers are good.

    Cons

-Always feeling like there's a noose waiting to cinch around your neck
-Inconsistent work load, contributing to the first problem
-not many opportunities to advance beyond being "the field guy".
    -like 20 managers for 3 field geologists/scientists.
-laughably expensive insurance if you have a family

Just like all engineering consulting companies, if you aren't billable, you're costing them money and liable to end up on the chopping block. You can't really help this, as it's the responsibility of the project managers to bring in work to keep everyone busy. They consistently fail at bringing in steady work. You'll be booked solid two months in advance, but after that you might be looking at a whole lot of nothing. Also, it seems like there are a huge number of project managers there and only a few actual "do-ers". The pyramid seems inverted to me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more aggressive at bringing in a consistent work load. Keep everyone busy, keep everyone happy.
