Research has clear impact
Research has impact quickly
Collaborations possible with industry, international and academics

Cons

Government paperwork
Budget and research can be stalled due to bickering in Congress over budget
Federal employees often get 'vilified' as we're easy targets

Advice to Management

Promote the research done to the public, require any product made here and sold to industry to indicate that the original research was done at the USDA-ARS. Promote research done here on website in a manner similar to NIH, NSF, and industry

    Pros

Flexible hours; teamwork; good advancement opportunities; provides opportunities to see the service we provide matters; OK salary; good benefits, especially leave (including holidays)

    Cons

Some people disrespect people who work for the government; Congress is generally to blame for problems the public perceives in government, but the public generally blames the career government workers.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should be more strategic in their planning. They also often are too involved with tactical issues -- these issues should be left to mid-level managers.

I have been working at US Agricultural Research Service

    Pros

The pay is great compared to working at a university. Health and life insurance is available, as well as annual and sick leave. The work schedule is quite flexible and you are able to present at scientific meetings.

    Cons

The experience of working for ARS varies greatly depending on the unit. I personally feel undervalued by the unit leader, but my immediate supervisor acknowledges my good work constantly. There is an abundance of favoritism in the unit, leading to bitterness and resentment among some employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop rewarding those who don't deserve it. The same rules should apply to EVERYONE.
