I have been working at US Airways full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

It's an airline job. For those who have been bitten, it's pretty much like every other airline. Flight benefits can be a pro, but flights are always full so it can be difficult to fly standby. There is a 20% discount if you want to pay for your ticket and fly positive space. Nothing outstanding about this company, but nothing that is horrible by comparison to other airlines.

Cons

Promotions to management are often based on inter-office politics rather than filling positions with the right people. There are also way too many managers and directors than necessary. Also, there is an 8% cap on how much of a raise you can get if you get promoted. This makes a lot of good people not want to get promoted because it's not worth the small raise to take on the added work load, hours and responsibility.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trim back the number of managers/directors and better select your leaders based on experience and ability to lead rather than based on politics.

I have been working at US Airways full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Free travel
    - Per diem
    - Ability to pick up extra hours
    - 11 days off a month and possibility for more

    Cons

    - Pay (hourly rate sounds good but does not add up too much without working on days off)
    - Having to work on your days off
    - Uniforms could be more attractive

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more transparency with workers. People at the top of the totem seem to keep big decisions under wraps until they feel ready to reveal why or what they are doing.

I have been working at US Airways full-time

    Pros

Excellent training programs, fast paced and challenging, great travel benefits. Working around AC! Excellent communication from corporate management.
If you have a good work ethic and want to advance there are plenty of career opportunities. You will never be bored.

    Cons

Pay is not the best, okay for younger and older workers or two income families. No way to support a single income family. More constantly changing rules and regulations than any other industry for much lower salary. The stress of knowing your job is on the line every day if anything goes wrong on your shift (which often is filled with WARM BODIES that don't care and are only interested in the flying benefit) can be overwhelming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A better pay structure form the bottom to the top might help attract a better class of worker. The constant change of personnel from managers down with the associated training costs and possible costs associated with damaged AC from inexperienced workers could be offset with a more stable work force. Perhaps a change in flying benefits in exchange for pay like an increasing number of passes per year starting low and going to the current level over say 5 or 8 years? A system like that might keep the employee that is only interested in the flying benefit from coming on board in the first place.
