I worked at US Army Corps of Engineers as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

It was a very laid back environment and my co-workers were very nice and willing to help.

Cons

A lot of older people did not want to teach others in fear of "job security"

I have been working at US Army Corps of Engineers full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very friendly place to work, laid back. Most of the time if you are unhappy they will find another position for you where you'll be a better fit.

    Cons

Pay isn't the best (but it's gov work, so you give and take). Doesn't seem to be a lot of room to move up.

    Advice to Management

Fire people who deserve it (people who always come in late and leave early/take 2 hour lunches/never do any work but play on facebook all day)

  2. Helpful (1)

Good place if you are looking for stability. Comes at the price of being static with no chance of advancement.

I have been working at US Army Corps of Engineers full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It has some flexibility. The Thrift Savings Plan run by Black Rock is nice. Generally, the people are very nice. It takes a lot (not impossible) to get fired. Hours are set, you are here for 42.5 hours a week. No more no less. Which makes work life balance a little easier. Training (although curtailed recently) was very good. Paid for my PMP.

    Cons

You WILL be punished for performing well. The slowest, meakest are promoted because they are not effective. This creates a system where the best and brightest are kept in the lowest rungs becuase they perform, the underachievers are promoted (as opposed to fired) to other departments. VERY bureacratic. Furloughs have take 20 points of salary is a big con, and promotions are non existent. For those who think you get an automatc raise or COLA. You would be mistaken, a detailed analysis

    Advice to Management

Stop being so scared. Managament tends to look for small innoucuos victories, while large pressing issues requiring leadership and courage are ignored.
