I have been working at US Army as a contractor (more than 3 years)

Pros

Stable and guarenteed job, little to no chance of being laid off or fired, able to live on base instead of civilian housing.

Cons

Pay is not always too good, Slow about paying employees, Hazards abound

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay a bit faster and a bit better. Some soldiers are otherwise unemployed.

I have been working at US Army full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Housing entitlements based on location and family situation; food allowance, and other special pays normally non-taxable. Annual pay raises and opportunities to advance although slowing down due to downsizing. 30 days paid vacation plus at least 1 3 or 4 day weekend every month. 20 year immediate retirement if you make it that long. Free health care although level of service varies from base to base.

    Cons

Lack of freedom, salary type job where hours may vary, deployments and other temporary duty time spend away from family. Possibility of toxic leadership with only chance to move every 2 to 3 years.

I have been working at US Army full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable work if you do the right thing and don't get yourself into trouble. Provides a living wage. You can have experience that no one in the civilian sector can match. Full health care for you and your family.

    Cons

Depending on your MOS you can have a very unstable work schedule. Many months spent in the field throughout the year. Stressful work environments. Extremely taxing work. If you end up with a bad set of leadership or leadership that is inconsistent it will end up reflecting on to your personal life. Soldiers who are only there for the money and don't put forth effort. You can die.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your soldiers informed. Stop riding your title out and use your resources.
