Former Employee - Administrative Clerk in Long Island City, NY

I worked at US Census Bureau full-time (less than a year)

Pros

you only need to do well on the test and then you will be considered for employment! they teach you everything you need to know to do your job and there were opportunities for advancement. I had no career path before working for census but by being in administration i discovered my interest in HR/Payroll. Today, 3 yrs later, I have been able to turn my census experience into a fulfulling and successful profession.

Cons

it was a temporary assignment so no matter how well you performed or how much you want to stay on, there is a set end date.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

looking forward to 2020- maybe we can have a more efficient payroll system by then? ;)

I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

good work/life balance, gym in the building, teleworking opportunities, flexible schedule

    Cons

political dependencies, inappropriate promotions (e.g. promotions based on quotas), building is located in a poor, not-so-safe area, if you're a motivated employee you will have to lower your standards to fit in, co-workers are lazy (on average)

I have been working at US Census Bureau full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

opportunity to learn a lot about survey and research methodology.
lots of technical, leadership, and project management training opportunities.
    flexible work schedules.
    generally interesting work.
    generally friendly colleagues.

    Cons

performance bonuses for top performing staff are a joke.
Unequal hiring standards for economists vs. sociologists and demographers: Bureau hires economists with a Ph.D. and no work experience at a GS12 with a signing bonus and automatic advancement to a GS13 after 2 years. Sociologists with a Ph.D. and no work experience are hired at a GS11 with no signing bonus and have to competitively apply for a GS 13 after an average of 3 years. In most all branches, economists and sociologists do the exact same work.
Advancement can take a long while or require a lot of persistentence.
A lot about how interesting your work is, how much you learn, how much responsibility you have, and how much research you are able to do depends on the specific branch in which you work. Some branches will give you a lot of responsibility and interesting / new work to do very quickly. Other branches will leave you doing work that can be done by a high school student.
Bureau has a bad habit of promoting people into management who are very good at the technical work but don't want to be managers and are really horrible at it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring economists at different grades / promotional opportunities than sociologists to do the same work, it's unethical and destroys morale within the branches when staff find out.
Stop promoting people into management just because they've been around for a long time and know how to do their current job well. This doesn't make them good managers.
