I worked at US Citizenship and Immigration Services

Pros

Federal employment is a safe and stable place to work. Pay increases are typically provided regularly. Performance goals are usually easily achieved

Cons

Promotion potential is based on tenure within the federal system, not on knowledge or abilities. Federal retention rules make it nearly impossible for non-performers to be removed from the system.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

When hiring from the private sector, the high achievers look for responsibility, advancement opportunities and meaningful recognition. They expect more open lines of communication. You must be flexible in order to maintain top performers. Low performers will be content to do the minimum and not improve your operations.

I have been working at US Citizenship and Immigration Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The pay is good if you stick with it. Not much else.

    Cons

You have to leave your dignity and self respect at the door. This is the government, they hire who they want, they fire who they don't want. They create arbitrary guidelines and have a very haphazard way of accepting or rejecting officer decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to lead, not just how to dictate. Treat people with the respect that they deserve. Try to remember what it was like when you were coming up.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
