I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Advancement is very good. Chance to live and work in many different parts of the country. Many training opportunities. Current system allows for retirement at 20 years 50% base pay. Housing and COLA pay. Retirement increases at 2.5% a year after 20. Mandatory retirement at 30 years. For max of 75% base pay.

Cons

Moving every 4 years gets old after awhile. Military Retirement system like everywhere under threat. Health care cost increasing for retiree's
