I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Working for the DoD is very satisfying. The majority of DoD commands are extremely family friendly, flexible work hours and the pay is very competitive. Benefit to working for the Government are rules and regulations are governed by Federal Law.

Cons

Local policies are typically governed by the senior management who are not always in touch with the work force. Unless you've worked for the government or served in the military, it can be very difficult to hire on into the government unless direct hire authority has been granted by OPM.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you get an opportunity to hire on to the Department of Defense, you should take advantage of it. It's very rewarding.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going to offer incentives and promotions to some, make it for those that excel and are dependable... don't make it just for those that kiss up or know the right people. Also if someone doesn't hold up their share of the work, don't be so passive aggressive.
