Former Employee - Senior Systems Engineer in Tucson, AZ

I worked at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Pay can be competitive for certain GS positions that are hard to fill. Good medical, vision and dental plans. Retirement is based on what you put into the retirement systems and social security. If you like travel it is available depending on the position held. Family crisis are handled with respect and dignity. Challenging work and work areas

Cons

Some jobs can keep you on travel for over 6 months at a time. This is extremely hard on family. Under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) you have to wait until you are 65 to get your full retirement. The old way of applying for jobs was based on your resume, some agencies now require you to respond to additional questions (DCMA has 29 additional multiple choice questions that have four or five responses that may only change by one word) that can chase you away from the position. In some agencies, the chance for promotion is extremely difficult, you may be locked into the same position at the same level for most of your career. Once you reach step 10 there is no further pay increases except for yearly increases, so for your last 10-15 years of service you remain at the same pay grade and step.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Stable work. Challenging work and people. Allows you a chance to support the military.

    Cons

Pay that does not change. Promotion opportunities are almost none existent. if you move to another location and the locality pay is lower. You have to take a pay cut. Work with a lot of retired military who are not qualified for the jobs but were hired because of their prior military status.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people who are qualified and promote people who have earned it.

Current Employee - Human Resources Specialist in Washington, DC

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, good camaraderie, stable income, variety of career paths for both military and civilians

    Cons

Old-fashioned, conservative values can get in the way of equality and civil rights even in the face of executive orders and OPM policy demanding equality, diversity, and inclusion; the LGBT community within DoD receives no partner or survivor benefits unlike its counterparts at the State Department

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strategically plan how to include the LGBT workforce to the fullest extent allowed under the law instead of playing catch up after the executive orders/laws are changed. Include LGBT as strategic HR/EO partners by including the community as one of the Special Emphasis Program Managers (SEPM). Lean forward with diversity and inclusion rather than waiting for it to be mandated and enforced.
