I worked at US Department of Health and Human Services full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Lots of opportunities to grow, learn and find your passion in different offices, fair internal hiring practices, good pay, interesting work, making a difference in the lives of others, positive work environment, good coworkers overall.

Cons

Interoffice communication can be a challenge, hours can be long, things can move forward.very slowly at times because there can be so many cooks in the kitchen between various offices and outside groups.

Advice to Management

Cooperation is critical to success, foster a culture of collaboration.

Red tape, down time, unnecessary waiting for something as simple as an access badge.

Current Employee - Administrative Law Judge in Cleveland, OH
    Approves of CEO

    Pros

There is plenty of work to keep busy and mostly adequate support staff to get it done. Congress has set deadlines for case processing that prevent needless procrastination. The office space, location and furnishings are great. They mostly leave you alone if you show up and do your job. The work itself is very satisfying and intellectually stimulating. The team atmosphere is great.

    Cons

The computer system is horrible and overly focused on counting beans, instead of helping to grow and harvest them. There is no way to search for decisions other than sending out "has anyone done this?" emails. The decisions are not automated at all with mail merge or templates -- we just write over the last one which results in unnecessary errors. Top heavy with management that has no idea what they are doing, but is actively doing things anyway.

    Advice to Management

They need to get back to providing the pencils and paperclips and stop the micro management, which is making things worse. Understanding that they need something to do to justify their existence, maybe they could try computer solitaire?
