I worked at US Department of Justice full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to work on important, challenging, diverse cases, get into court, work with and against smart people. Management always did the right thing, was experienced, never got pushback based on political agendas, my opinion was respected, and I generally wasn't micro-managed.

    Cons

Budget is a nightmare, no raises - for years. Forget about upward mobility in small to mid-sized offices, management is hunkered down and you probably aren't ever going to advance if upward mobility is a goal. Many had been there for 10 years and remained in the exact same spot - big red flag. The emphasis on stats is demoralizing when secretarial support is non-existent, raises are frozen, there's a hiring freeze, and every year the expectation is to indict more cases and close them faster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your attorneys and show sincere appreciation. There's no money, there's little support staff, there's no advancement, and if there's no appreciation is it surprising employees are leaving?

I worked at US Department of Justice part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A secure job with a ton of gifted legal and paralegal professionals, many of whom care about what they do so much that they forego much bigger-dollar salaries in the private sector. Much collaborative assistance and good professional development opportunities and training. Arguably the foremost location in the world for legal policy wonks.

    Cons

Often long hours and time pressures, but then that comes with the legal work world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't cut back on your library staff.
