I worked at US Department of Labor

Pros

Good work/life balance, good compensation considering the low level of mental abilities required to successfully perform job, good apprenticeship-style advancement program for entry-level employees, great health and retirement benefits.

Cons

Very poor leadership from middle managers, excessive number of people who only work for a paycheck instead of working for the intrinsic value of being a productive adult and an American citizen, miserable work environment caused by terrible managers and unhappy employees, very limited promotion opportunities once you reach full performance level in your current position.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to spend much more time training and coaching middle managers on true leadership development; it would really be better if middle managers were pressured to quit or retire since old habits die hard.

I have been working at US Department of Labor

    Pros

Work like balance is a plus, the people are usually easy to work with and management helps out their new employees toward upper development with the organization.

    Cons

Small projects can become tedious over time. Small jobs take longer because of the "laid back" culture within the government.
