Very good, but cronyism prevails within the senior ranks of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security

Former Employee - Senior Executive in Washington, DC

I worked at US Department of State full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

See the world, protect the best brand in the world - the US....and live history.

Cons

Away from family and friends while posted overseas. Subject to a very small Bureau (DSS) that does not necessary recognize merit based promotions within the senior ranks, but more crony & clique based senior promotions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the promotion panels with more impartial Foreign Service Generalists to review DS Specialists. Don't let the DSS (subject matter expert) influence the board.

Dysfunctional HR system stymies Best and Brightest

I worked at US Department of State

    Pros

Highly selective recruiting process often produces impressive colleagues.
    International living, language learning opportunities.
Meet lots of interesting people abroad, many of them civic or political leaders in their cultures.
Write analyses of human rights, religious freedom, trafficking in persons that have an impact.

    Cons

Short tours make for frequent, sometimes difficult family adjustments, especially for trailing or tandem spouses.
Excessive human resources devoted to VIP handling, which means standing around uselessly as a "site officer."
Promotions decided by a panel completely removed from its subjects, influenced by political correctness in designating promotees although ostensibly reliant upon written reports which consume an inordinate amount of energy each April but provide little meaningful feedback

Former Employee - Intern in Arlington, VA

I worked at US Department of State

    Pros

    - Firsthand access to working with diplomats: if your career goal is to be a FSO than an internship at the Foreign Service Institute will give you more than ample opportunities to network and ask questions.

    - Work with people from all over the world.

    - Amazing cafeteria, their soups are unbeatable.

    - If you speak a foreign language you can practice it there every day.

    - Very friendly and understanding mentors.

    Cons

    - If you are doing a summer internship, the quality of your experience will depends entirely upon which department you work in. Some of my colleges would pace the halls all day long because they literally had nothing to do. Of course, the free time you have can be used to network, but if you want to put something impressive on a resume other than the fact that you were accepted for a prestigious internship, you may end up having little to say. Considering that a majority of these internships are unpaid, and you may have to rent an expensive apartment in DC, you may feel like you flushed your whole summer down the toilet.

    - Intern coordinators can be difficult to get ahold of, and if you complain about having nothing to do, they will tell you it is your fault for not trying hard enough to find work for yourself.

    - If you are looking for networking opportunities at the Main State building, you'll find yourself cut off.
