I have been working at US Department of State full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The work is typically challenging, in interesting locations, with ample administrative support, ample paid leave periods, and ample life support, e.g., billeting, meals, etc.

Cons

The agency is risk averse, and reticent to make adequate, timely decisions regarding topics of importance to both the U.S. and foreign governments.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be less risk averse and incorporate more timely and forceful decision-making.

I have been working at US Department of State full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For international relations junkies, this is the place to be. You will be working with intelligent, ambitious people with a passion for public service. It's a huge agency that works in many, many different sectors.

    Cons

Still very stratified between foreign service, civil service and contractors. Difficult to build a varied, fulfilling career in civil service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider reforming the personnel system. The department would be better served if FSOs didn't all have to rotate out after only 2 years and weren't incentivized to make change where it is sometimes unwarranted. Civil servants should be given more opportunities to develop a broader ranger of experiences by having the option to perform temporary rotations in other bureaus and overseas posts.
