Pros

Work with some of the most incredible minds on some of the worlds most challenging issues. After working here getting a job elsewhere is simple. Opportunity to travel the world.

Cons

Slow moving ladder. Unless, you attended a top 1% college or unv and attained both experience and a good reputation it is very difficult to attain a Career Length Job. Very competitive jobs for not so competitive pay.

    Pros

World travel, occasional policy input, decent benefits.

    Cons

Pseudo-military chain of "command" run by screaming incompetents; hated by Congress; misunderstood by most of the few Americans aware of its existence.

    Advice to Management

Tear it down and start over. The sad fact is that, under the current performance review system, a boss who doesn't like you and a boss's boss who doesn't care is enough to end one's career. This is not, funnily enough, cutting-edge personnel development practice, outside of North Korea.

    Pros

Working at State certainly as a student has it's pros and cons. Pros - you're at the premier foreign-policy making agency of the USG. In most cases your are truly utilized on policy issues and assignments because of staff shortages.

    Cons

But because of those staff shortages, there is little to no chance that you will be hired. The USG is currently addressing these known challenges with their new Pathways initiatives which will hopefully do a better job at retaining student talent. Only time will tell whether Pathways does this though!!
