I have been working at US Department of State full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The work is extremely interesting and is can affect millions

    Cons

The workplace is very hierarchical. If you're junior, it's frowned upon if you ever try to speak to someone senior. It's demoralizing.

I worked at US Department of State full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    -Empowering environment
-great co-workers, many of whom are willing to give advice, take it with a grain of salt though there are a wide variety of career paths at the State Department
-feels like you are making a difference even if you aren't

    Cons

-little transparency in the hiring process
-limited potential for advancement as an intern, not much better for contractors or civil service, Foreign Service Officers are the most supported for obvious reasons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell interns what they will be doing before hiring them, delegate more responsibility. be upfront about long term hiring processes

    Recommends
