I have been working at US Department of State full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

good employer, good benefits, strict hours

    Cons

if at a non-DC location, promotions require relocating or finding a different employer

    Advice to Management

allow team members to spend time on their own career advancement. This will let them see more opportunities on where they can go within the department

    Good Opportunity

    Pros

There are a lot of good civil service positions within the Department. Working at State allows individuals to support the United States' mission abroad. It can be an extremely rewarding experience if in the right position.

    Cons

There are plenty of opportunities for lateral moves within the Department but upon reaching the maximum grade for your position, you have to apply to a new position to get the next grade. If no position exists in your office, you'll have to apply elsewhere in the Department. Networking is key.

    Advice to Management

Specialized experience can certainly benefit an organization; however, requiring it for a position may eliminate qualified individuals who can bring a lot to the office.
