I worked at US Department of State

Pros

Worked directly with Econ. head as well as meet with leaders in the energy world. Free housing at the US Embassy

Cons

it was an unpaid internship, but i knew that when i took it. Serbian classes should have been given to establish a base.

I have been working at US Department of State

    Pros

There are a lot of good civil service positions within the Department. Working at State allows individuals to support the United States' mission abroad. It can be an extremely rewarding experience if in the right position.

    Cons

There are plenty of opportunities for lateral moves within the Department but upon reaching the maximum grade for your position, you have to apply to a new position to get the next grade. If no position exists in your office, you'll have to apply elsewhere in the Department. Networking is key.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Specialized experience can certainly benefit an organization; however, requiring it for a position may eliminate qualified individuals who can bring a lot to the office.
