I worked at US Department of State full-time

Pros

The diplomatic immunity is always nice, as was the lifestyle, and in this economic climate you can't beat the job security.

Cons

You will have very little control over what you do and where you live. This is a large bureaucracy, it is incredibly outdated, inflexible, and un-acommodating.

    I worked at US Department of State as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    I completed two internships (one as an undergrad and one as a grad student) with Main State in DC. Both experiences were extremely productive. Exposure to gov't program management and policy writing are unlike other comparable experiences in different gov't agencies. Strong sense of civil service among your colleagues.

    Cons

    - Internships are usually unpaid;
    - Some supervisors are extremely high-strung and expect a lot from you; at times, I didn't leave the office until 11 PM;
    - Work can come in waves, especially during the summer months. But it's up to the interns to make the most of their time at the department (and DC, if you're not from here).

    I worked at US Department of State as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    People,People,Culture, and People! The people there were so friendly and receptive. I got to experience some pretty cool things, like seeing Hillary Clinton speak in person (amazing).

    Cons

    None that I think of!
