Former Intern - Anonymous Intern in Brussels (Belgium)

I worked at US Department of State as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

- Shadowing and working alongside intelligent, insightful, and interesting people (both FSOs and foreign nationals)
- Engaging with the local population in myriad ways in support of US policy; it was a way to dive into another culture while also analyzing your own culture in a new context
- Having the opportunity to pitch your own ideas and actively contribute; interns are active members of the FS dynamic, not passive observers
- Unparalleled access into the Foreign Service career/lifestyle to decide if it's right for you

Cons

- Internships are unpaid and require you to find your own housing without much guidance (though this might vary from post to post)

    Pros

Living overseas, interesting colleagues and a career where one is always learning. Free housing and private schools overseas and a very generous pension plan with early retirement.

    Cons

Constantly moving makes it very difficult for spouse or partner to work. Some children have problems moving but mine loved the experience

    Advice to Management

Stop tolerating bullying by managers by enforcing policies.

  2. Great experience, good benefits, hard work

    Pros

You get to really be at the front lines of diplomacy. The job of a foreign service officer is very well respected and the benefits are great (free housing, home leave, medical care). Plus, you get to see the world.

    Cons

Moving every few years can become wearing. The Dept. of State is very much USG and as such there is a high level of bureaucracy to navigate.

    Advice to Management

Flexibility with part-time or leave without pay after people become parents would probably help with employee retention.
