It's What You Make It

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Brussels (Belgium)

Pros- Shadowing and working alongside intelligent, insightful, and interesting people (both FSOs and foreign nationals)
- Engaging with the local population in myriad ways in support of US policy; it was a way to dive into another culture while also analyzing your own culture in a new context
- Having the opportunity to pitch your own ideas and actively contribute; interns are active members of the FS dynamic, not passive observers
- Unparalleled access into the Foreign Service career/lifestyle to decide if it's right for you

Cons- Internships are unpaid and require you to find your own housing without much guidance (though this might vary from post to post)
