You don't control your life, but other than that it's great!

Former Employee - Foreign Service Officer in Washington, DC

I worked at US Department of State full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

High salary, best benefits in the world (what other jobs give you the same type of passport as the president of the U.S.?), opportunities to travel, lots of opportunities to make a difference (although whether that is a positive or negative difference depends on you)

Cons

You can tell the HR bureau what you want to do, they will then tell you what you have to do. There may or may not be a correlation between the two. Spouse, kids, career choices all have to be put to the side, and expect to do consular work in Juarez or a similar posting for at least two years. If you're willing to make that sacrifice, then the job is pretty awesome.
