Pros

Well structured, organized, and has a great chain of communication for discussing about issues. Overall, it was a great atmosphere that really help develop personal abilities.

Cons

A lot of employees makes it seem easy to get lost among the crowd. It is also difficult to show yourself and your work among the crowd, previously mentioned, especially as a contractor.

    Pros

The people. You'll work with some incredible people solving incredible problems. The travel opportunities are unmatched and the work is challenging.

    Cons

The people. There is a lot of dysfunction and, quite frankly, there are a lot of people heading overseas for some rather discouraging reasons - like just to meet girls. Technology is pretty outdated and the bureaucracy is probably worse than you would imagine.

    Advice to Management

Folks head out and fall apart. It would be nice if there were better strategies in place for dealing with that. Management also talks about work-life balance but it doesn't seem like we have progresses very far. Would be nice to see more movement in this direction.

  2. An overall positive workplace, but with wide variation between offices.

    Pros

Fantastic overall mission that gives an employee sense of purpose and drive. No other institution can have more impact on the functioning on U.S. foreign policy.

    Cons

Thick and immobile bureaucracy can limit one's daily function to menial tasks that seem distant from the broader objective of the Department.
