US Department of State – “Good money for minimal work”
1 of 1 people found this helpfulPros
Salary and benefits are excellent. Also, as a civil servant you have have the opportunity to take a temporary position overseas, if you have a specific needed skill-set (accountants are in demand in this regard). There seems to be about half as much work than an employee in the private sector would expect. This is good in that you won't be overworked or overstressed and you can easily excel in your field.
Cons
Boredom and lazy coworkers - since there seems to be about half as much work than an employee in the private sector would expect, people get into a very laid back mode and tend to not work. If laziness annoys you stay away from the government. Also the bureaucracy makes the State Dept a very inefficient and frustrating place to work if you are young and like to see things accomplished.
Advice to Senior Management
Give people more work to do. Promote a internal "customer service" attitude. Mingle with the troops - it encourages people.
