I worked at US Department of State as an intern for less than a year

Pros

Incredible access to foreign policy decision-making and international economic and political issues. Flexible internship that rewards (and even recognizes) ambition and hard work.

Cons

Unpaid internship without sufficient resources to help interns adjust to living in a foreign country (foreign embassy post). Opportunities depend on mentor as well as posting.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

This internship requires an active and committed mentor

    I have been working at US Department of State

    Pros

    Great training, liberal leave policy, excellent overseas exposure.

    Cons

    Majority of career will be spent overseas, moving every 2-3 years. Incredibly bloated with no incentive to do a good job. Broken, biased promotion system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Lead from the front. Promote based on merit, not EEO quotas, and be willing to question authority.
