Former Employee - Intern  in  Brussels (Belgium)
Former Employee - Intern in Brussels (Belgium)

Pros

Incredible access to foreign policy decision-making and international economic and political issues. Flexible internship that rewards (and even recognizes) ambition and hard work.

Cons

Unpaid internship without sufficient resources to help interns adjust to living in a foreign country (foreign embassy post). Opportunities depend on mentor as well as posting.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

This internship requires an active and committed mentor

    Former Employee - Public Diplomacy
    Former Employee - Public Diplomacy

    Pros

Living abroad, working headline news issues, working closely with some of the best and brightest out there.

    Cons

Non-existent HR support, poor leadership at the mid-to-senior level, and a significant percentage of jobs that are either dreadful or poorly located.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The State has wonderful people coming in, but way to many failures are allowed to stay in. Over a twenty year career, they end up as management. Have the courage to eliminate the chaff early.

Former Employee - Program Specialist  in  Mexico, Distrito Federal (Mexico)
Former Employee - Program Specialist in Mexico, Distrito Federal (Mexico)

    Pros

When you know the rules, you can know what to expect and can be very successful. There is a timeline for reviews and promotions, regular raises, channels for communications with upper management. It's unusual to get fired.

    Cons

People can homestead and viciously defend their privileges. The undercurrent of favors and favoritism is discouraging and many managers simply wait and pass existing problems on to their replacements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use information gained outside of official channels.
