    Pros

Advancement of lower level employees is very fast up to a certain point. Benefits in general are very good in any government agency, DOT is no different. Generally enjoy the work environment.

    Cons

Training budget is very limited to keep employee skills up to date. Some of the 14s and 15s are very lazy and hold up projects for long periods of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that more weeding out of individuals who are unwilling to perform up to an expected standard for their grade level is needed.

    Pros

Working in the National Vehicle Safety (NVS) part of NHTSA can be extremely rewarding because you are overseeing the safety of the general public, by reducing highway traffic injuries and deaths. Some particular jobs involve vehicle crash testing. The pay promotions and benefits are excellent. Transit benefits are including, approximately $150 per month to use the metro. Salaries for entry level engineers start from GS7 and move to a GS9 in one year, then GS11, GS12, GS13 every year. A GS14 is possible after some time and some special projects. GS15 is for management. and SES levels are possible for upper managements like Office Directors and Administrators. The promotions are mainly based on time in service over performance, but it is important to work hard and make your managers happy with you because they approve or dissapprove your promotions. Every year there is a inflation adjustment of 3-5% in your salary regardless of a promotion or not. You are entitled to the TSP retirement program and there is 5% matching contribution. Health, dental, vision is available. Our division also allows telecommuting (working from home) twice a week as well as RDO's (rotating days off) (i.e. a friday or monday of every other week off).

    Cons

Occasionally you may have to work with a disagreeable manager who isn't fun to work with but the majority of the people at NHTSA are pleasant, helpful and independent. It is a calm atmosphere and people do a good job and there is usually low stress. Sometimes, you will have to accomplish a task quickly, but this is not too hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure all people are being treated fairly.
