    Pros

    *The projects are very interesting
    *The non-management people are brilliant and fun
    *Transportation issues are important
    *Location is good - near the subway, Esplanade, MIT
    *Hours are very flexible - core hours are 10am to 3pm.

    Cons

    *Management is capricious, ignorant, and inefficient
    *Paperwork can be tedious
    *Pay is relatively low
    *The benefits are poor
    *Building is old
    *Everyone shares offices

    Advice to Management

    Don't take your stress out on your workers. Overworking everyone is not a sustainable business model.

    Pros

    The best reason to work for US DOT is the core mission of all the modes is to save lives.

    Cons

    The US DOT still works in a vaccum. They have not grasped the importance of collaboration - an extension of partnership. Partnerships in the "real" world are when you share common goals with another agency or organization but use your own separate means to get there. Collaboration is when you work together to achieve those goals. DOT tends to work on an island by themselves and not with others. Another issue with DOT is an aging population who have been placed in management and therefore has positioned others in key positions based on personal preferences. Nepotism is very prevalent in this agency.

    Advice to Management

    It appears that the political appointees of this Administration "gets it". They understand what it takes to suceed and how to structure the organization by employing and retaining a skilled workforce. I hope they are able to keep the momentum to change DOT into the great agency it has the potential to become.
