Pros

great lifetime benefits with pension determined by years in service and you still receive social security on top of that plus a matching 401k benefit

Cons

many professionals in our fields do not have a high opinion of the workforce and many folks are afraid of what the government can do to them or others

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to explain to the public that their employees are hard working and come from among them and are not transplants from an alien country or society

Culture/leadership needs to come into the 21st century.

Stimulating for an undergrad, given a lot of responsibilities and treated like a normal employee

Former Employee - Intern in Washington, DC

    Pros

get to engage in interesting analytical work for countries and emerging economies if you are in international affairs office; encourage mobility and transfer to other offices to gain more exposure and experience

    Cons

at times slow is work; a lot less quantitative and a lot more about strong writing skills than one would think; office culture can be a bit of a drag sometimes as many people take themselves a little too seriously, but government agencies in particular are known for being a bit stuffy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

my boss in particular was wonderful about treating me without kid gloves as an intern; i recommend that other offices do the same because I would proudly recommend other interns to work for the office I was in
