I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Veteran Patients, nice area, bottom has been reached

Cons

Administration does not have a plan. When things fall apart, they blame the staff. Things are swept under the rug because staff are fearful of administration.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Repair relationships with staff by accepting responsibility and acknowledging part in plans gone awry. Slowly rebuild trust by including staff in decisions and making incremental changes with staff involvement. Avoid favoritism and refrain from repeatedly acknowledging the same few people and programs.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

really good pay for nurses, able to move up payscale quickly if you put in the time and effort. GREAT PATIENT POPULATION!!! I cannot stress this more. I love the patients here. workload wise compare to private sector is much easier.

    Cons

terrible HR and terrible management. so much politics! if you want to have something done by HR, you have to wait about 2-3 months average to get it done. ie. get a new badge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

PLEASE PLEASE focus your time on patients, not quarreling between administration.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs

    Pros

Work with patients and directly help veterans. Make a difference in people's lives and after a while you begin to see the changes affecting them which is great.

    Cons

Pretty low pay for the amount of work you have to do and there are very little chances to move up pay grades. It's also pretty tough to apply for more jobs within the Department because they give veterans preferential treatment (albeit understandably so).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay the employees more!
