Pros

The employees all love helping veterans.

Cons

VA is a very large organization, which by nature has a good amount of dysfunction and barriers to communication between the upper and lower levels of the organization.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find more creative ways to take advantage of true talent, rather than making those people go through the same cattle herding promotion system as everyone else. There should always be exceptions to the rules, because exceptional people do exist and do want to do great things for the organization. These exceptional people do not want to sit around waiting for an opportunity to get promoted while being mentored by people that were just the best available at the time they were promoted, and not actually a quality manager.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The individual has opportunities for advancement in most areas, which includes steps and pay grade. One will receive education in their field of choice. An incredible experience through getting to know the history's of those who served in all aspects of combat, from the very old veterans: World War One, to present. Good benefits.

    Cons

All though, the VMAC can be a great place of employment, like all jobs, there are some down falls. This particular job can include experiencing the loss of some veterans, due to multiple complication, due to their employment while serving our nation. Very difficult, as an employee. One can become attached to their patients, veteran.
The VAMC have many rules that have to be followed to the letter. Often, the rules can be exceptionally difficult to maintain. One, has to have multi tasking skills to be able to do the job effectively and efficiently. I worked in a clinical area. Considering the amount of patient flow, and all the tasking that went with this particular job, at times it can be impossible. Clinical jobs at the VAMC, although can be rewarding, are often very stressful. The employee will have to maintain credits, and will be reviewed often, by supervisor and random inspections, which may have consequences if the employee has not fulfilled a job requirement to their expectations. With a clinical position, there is little room for error. Work over load is a normal, daily, occurrence.
