I have been working at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Pros

The people in this agency are extremely dedicated. Management in general is very good with a few exceptions. The agency is pretty good about not moving agents around too much. In general if you start the job in one office you can remain there unless you are a supervisor and then you are more likely to be moved. The case work is very good in most groups. You are given alot of freedom to run your cases the way you think they should be run.

Cons

Starting pay is a weak compared to the same job at other agencies ie: ATF, FBI, but after a few years it levels out.
New agents can potentially start at a GS 5 when other agencies with 1811's (special agents) start at the GS 9 or 10 level. There has been heavy turnover in recent years resulting in a lack of experienced agents to guide the newer agents. The equipment is sub par. The vehicles and electronic equipment are antiques, they are carry overs from the
two legacy agencies which formed ICE, US Customs and INS.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

This agency has so much potential. However, without addressing some of the issues listed above, turnover is going to remain high and moral will suffer.

    Pros

The level of freedom, the variety of investigations, the opportunity to shape a new agency.

    Cons

Agency has budget issues, things are still being finalized due to the agency being so new.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to promote the best people who can lead the agency towards becoming the finest law enforcement agency in the country.

It's hard to be let go; but, they value politically correct over efficient & effective implementation of the standard.

I have been working at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The job is not going away. Excellent job if you need EEO on your side. Stable. Good benefits. Good Mission, Vision. You work your 8 hours and you are done. Once you are hired, it is hard to be let go of.

    Cons

Hard to get hired, lots of competition. In the administrative departments they tend to promote based on who is going to put up the biggest fuss, not who is most qualified (there are systems in place to mitigate that, but it still happens more frequently then they would admit). They value politically correct over efficient and effective implementation of the standard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to promote those who are consistently meeting excellent and/or outstanding. Find a way to promote your thinkers and problem solvers. Tact is very important but not at the cost of quality and quantity.
