Pros

Travel, retirement benefits, and an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself were the best attributes of my time in the Marine Corps

Cons

Institutional arrogance runs kind of rampant. Promotions and personal image perception are cut throat games.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less rank does not mean less valuable.

    I have been working at US Marine Corps full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great leadership opportunities
    - Great educational opportunities
    - Travel (although some places arent the best)
    - Lots of motivated and goal driven individuals in this organization
    - Reliable pay and benefits
    - Pride in being part of a historic and elite organization

    Cons

    - Beauracracy is very big, clumsy, slow, and by its very nature hurts many employee's
    - Frequent moves, which is hard on families
    - Broken evaluation system that breeds cut throat politics
    - Broken recognition system of awards
    - Pointless regulations
    - Broken system of promotion and retention in which employees are promoted because they look better on paper and the system does not adequetly acknoweledge true skill in its leaders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Decentralize more control to your small unit leaders and managers. Stop with regulations solely designed to save your career. Allow for flexibility and freedom of lower level managers. Be responsive to the needs of your employees.
