Pros

- Great leadership opportunities
- Great educational opportunities
- Travel (although some places arent the best)
- Lots of motivated and goal driven individuals in this organization
- Reliable pay and benefits
- Pride in being part of a historic and elite organization

Cons

- Beauracracy is very big, clumsy, slow, and by its very nature hurts many employee's
- Frequent moves, which is hard on families
- Broken evaluation system that breeds cut throat politics
- Broken recognition system of awards
- Pointless regulations
- Broken system of promotion and retention in which employees are promoted because they look better on paper and the system does not adequetly acknoweledge true skill in its leaders.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decentralize more control to your small unit leaders and managers. Stop with regulations solely designed to save your career. Allow for flexibility and freedom of lower level managers. Be responsive to the needs of your employees.

I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, very easy job day to day (dependent on MOS), great opportunities for advancement (dependent on MOS), plenty of time off (dependent on individual command).

    Cons

Near dictatorial powers of leadership (very bad if you have a very bad command, possibly good if you have a very good command), many individuals in high positions are promoted there due to physical shape and bureaucratic competence with minimal regard paid to managerial skill or job competence, deployments, ridiculous rules enforced for no other reason than "tradition", leadership as a generality treating lower enlisted (E-5 and below) as children with no capacity for rational thought and decision making, mass punishments, little privacy for single junior Marines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop assuming lower enlisted are morons, enough with the mass punishments, treat a Marine's barracks room as a home and not a space which may be invaded at a whim, change the promotion system to favor job skills and managerial skill over physical strength and shooting skills when the individual's job does not relate directly.
